Another "Which set of Brazilian" thread (three more sets added 10/07)
I have decided to build a Brazilian OM, and have been offered two sets of wood from which to select. I quickly picked one set, and then changed my mind. I'd like to hear other's opinions on the sets...

I prefer the outer edges of 34. But it is your build.

At first look, I preferred the second set (34). I liked the straighter grain and the more contrasting colors. However, the more I looked at the barren area to the bottom left, I moved toward the first...

The first back, and the two right hand sides.

........the two right hand sides. It does look like the sides have been swapped, creating a mismatch.I also like the right-hand sides better, but the backs are pretty much equivalent.IMHO, it would be...

the second back doesn´t look bookmatched, I guess the sides we see in set 1 are the same as those in set 2

Definitely the first set.

Interesting. Both pretty close. I agree that the 2nd set, 34, doesn't look quite bookmatched. Also, on the right half looking at the photo, toward the center bottom there appears to be a swirl...

I'd take the last set hands down. I'd rather have a piece of old growth stump with that type of coloring over a set of completely vertical new growth. Assuming the builder found their taps to be in...

I would mention that Forum member htnj (Tommy) had Ken Hooper make a D-21 out of material similar to sets 3 and 4. Ken stained the light wood and orangish red and it turned out quite nice. Not to...

the last set, no question.... Rick LIVE AND LEARN!

The last set is the worst one shown. Flat sawn, wild grain.
View ArticleRe: Another "Which set of Brazilian" thread (three more sets added 10/07)
That last set is the only one shown so far that I would flat out refuse to build with.

That's why you gents build 'em and we just buy them.

That is not may favorite look in sapwood, but I do like the fact that those two sets are mostly quartered and flitch matched. The curved grain doesn't bother me, it's just that the sapwood accents the...

Bruce, I'd bet that that last set has the best density of the bunch. I know the wild grain is a no go but it looks much more "old growth" compared to the other sets. You'd have to have them in hand...

There's a lot you CAN'T tell from a photo...Hold a set in your hands tells you a lot about the density, musical resonance etc. We're limited when we can only "picture" the wood.
